JEFFERSON CITY — The state House of Representatives presented the Outstanding Missourian Award to Dr. H.J. Murrell, a retired oncologist from Columbia and one of Missouri’s most prominent pioneers in the development of cancer treatment.
The ceremony took place on March 26 at the State Capital.
”There are few who have done as much as Dr. Murrell to lead and promote the development of cancer treatment here in Mid-Missouri,” said Rep. Ed Robb, a Columbia Republican who sponsored Murrell for the award. “He is a legend in his field and someone who has dedicated his life to providing the best care possible to patients battling cancer. It is an honor to take part in paying tribute to this great man and his many accomplishments.”
Dr. Murrell completed his undergrad work at Rice University and attended medical school at the University of Texas-Galveston. He then completed a residency at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. In 1984 he was named to head Boone Hospital Center’s Radiation Oncology Department. In 1988 he was asked to design and run the radiation therapy program in Jefferson City. He also played a key role in assimilating the Ellis Fischel Cancer Center into the University of Missouri system in 1990.
Dr. Murrell’s other accomplishments include serving as the chief of staff at Boone Hospital; secretary of the Boone Hospital Board of Trustees; chairperson of the Missouri delegation of the American Medical Association; president of the Missouri State Medical Association; and chairman for the Missouri Center for Patient Safety
Dr. Murrell retired from active practice last fall and currently spends time with his wife Beverly. They have three children and four grandchildren.
