Previews and reviews of mid-Missouri events

Latest in Event Trends
Soft Sculptures: Change the dynamic of a room by using light in conjunction with fabric sculptures, also known as "soft-sculptures". Fabric backdrops are also relatively easy to light and can create a very interesting visual, hide an unsightly wall or section off different areas in the room. In these cases, spandex can be your best friend.

Cinematic Themes: Events sometimes do not lend themselves to unique and exciting themes. So the next time you are stumped about how to make your event incredible, go see a movie. Movies and TV shows can be great theme choices. Not only do they have crowd appeal, they also allow for recognition of one or many of the event's honorees.

Project the Right Idea: Bored with the same old same old of florals and candles? Looking for a modern alternative that yields a big impact?  Just consider projecting the look you want. Projection can do anything from washing over walls to putting words on water. It can also incorporate a 3-D element, impressive color and interesting graphics into the décor of your event. Projections also provide the perfect branding opportunity. Depending on the size of the event, projections can even be less expensive than more traditional alternatives.

Willie Nelson Concert
Where: Jesse Hall
When: July 22
Why: To listen to the historic and award-winning Willie Nelson perform.
Cost: $40-$50
Details: It can only be described as amazing. Prior to the performance, I regarded Willie as pretty frail and, to be honest, a little overrated. To the contrary, it was quite the opposite. Willie sung, strummed and even danced his way to 90 minutes of pure entertainment. He displayed a dizzying array of genres, covering rock, country, gospel, folk, bluegrass, and even a little of what bordered on rap. He was upbeat; his voice was solid; and his endurance was extraordinary. Special props go to Mike Dunn, Robert Wells, and Kimberly Mouser for booking a big name that still has plenty left in the tank.
Rating: 10/10—If you ever get another chance to see him perform…go.
